Mohamed Salah shows Chelsea were crazy to sell him as Liverpool let it slip

Image
The 25-year-old scored the opener and could've wrapped up maximum points against his former club in another decisive performance It was the story of what was for Chelsea and what could have been. When the breakthrough eventually arrived on a glacial Saturday night at Anfield, the goal belonged to Liverpool and a player once on their books, while the assist materialised from one they had been desperate to sign in the summer. Mohamed Salah became the first player to break double figures in front of the sticks in the Premier League after converting Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s toe-poke into his path. In September, Antonio Conte had wondered just what possessed Chelsea to sanction the sale of Kevin De Bruyne after his winner for Manchester City in south-west London, and here, he would’ve been just as perplexed by his club's decision to let the Egypt international depart. “Salah is a good player and is very dangerous,” the Italian said pre-match. “He's a tec...

Miracle in Seville? Ben Yedder trolls Liverpool after epic comeback

Image
The Sevilla attacker made reference to the Reds' famous Champions League comeback after his side pulled off a similar feat Tuesday      It wasn’t the Champions League final, but Wissam Ben Yedder could not help but draw comparisons Tuesday to a famous finale after a stunning three-goal comeback by Sevilla against Liverpool. Ben Yedder scored a second-half brace to help bring his side back into the contest against the Reds, after Liverpool took a 3-0 lead into the half. Zidane: We knew Ronaldo, Benzema goals would come

Image
The under-fire duo scored two each in Real Madrid's thrashing of APOEL, much to their head coach's delight Zinedine Zidane insists it was always a matter of time until Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema rediscovered their goalscoring form, after the duo scored two each in Real Madrid's 6-0 win over APOEL. Ronaldo, who has just one La Liga goal all season and had gone four games in a row without finding the net, scored the final two for his side as they cruised to a win in Cyprus and booked their place in the last 16 of the Champions League. The 32-year-old's goals took him to 98 for Madrid in the competition – one more than Lionel Messi has managed for Barcelona – and saw him set a new record of 18 in the tournament in a calendar year. Benzema has likewise come under fire for his form this term, with only two goals to his name in all competitions before the trip to Nicosia, but he netted twice in between a strike from Nacho Fernandez after...

It feels like we lost - Klopp frustrated at Liverpool's second-half collapse

Image
The Reds boss felt his side "stopped playing football" as they let slip a 3-0 half-time lead against Sevilla Jurgen Klopp felt Liverpool paid the price for being too passive as they surrendered a 3-0 half-time lead to draw 3-3 with Sevilla in a Champions League thriller. The Premier League side looked set to qualify for the knockout stages when they cruised into a commanding advantage, Roberto Firmino's brace of goals sandwiching a diving header from Sadio Mane. However, Liverpool collapsed after the break at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, Wissam Ben Yedder scoring twice before Guido Pizarro grabbed an injury-time equaliser for the hosts. Alberto Moreno endured a nightmare return to his old club, giving away a free-kick and a penalty that led to goals, though Klopp refused to lay the blame entirely at the feet of the Spanish left-back. "It's obvious, we played a very good first half and we stopped playing football in the second half," he told BT S...

The boys are back! Ronaldo & Benzema show it's wrong to write them off yet

Image
The two under-fire forwards have been struggling for goals of late, but usually save their best for the Champions League and scored two each at APOEL It has been a complicated campaign so far for Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema. The two Real Madrid forwards have only scored one goal apiece in La Liga, and that came in the same game, a 2-1 win away to Getafe. But at APOEL on Tuesday, they were both back to doing what they do best. Benzema had only netted twice in the entire season up until the trip to Cyprus - once in the Spanish Supercopa win over Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabeu and again in that victory against Getafe. Ronaldo, meanwhile, led the scoring charts in the Champions League prior to this fixture, but has been notably frustrated in the Primera Division and trails Barcelona rival Lionel Messi by 11 goals already - albeit after missing four Liga games through suspension. "He [Benzema] is the first one who knows he can give more," Zidane said...

The Belgian played a key role in Alvaro Morata’s 17th-minute opener before scoring the champions’ second and fourth goals as they won without needing to reach top gear at The Hawthorns. Marcos Alonso also found the net for Antonio Conte’s side, who left West Brom head coach Tony Pulis fighting to save his job after a display of lethargic defending. Derby stalemate leaves Real Madrid 10 points behind Barca

Image
Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid slipped 10 points behind Barcelona at the top of La Liga as a Madrid derby short on chances finished 0-0 at Atletico’s Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday. Earlier, Barca also weren’t at their best but Luis Suarez’s double ended a five-game goal drought for the Uruguayan and Paulinho’s late strike helped see off a determined Leganes 3-0. Both Madrid sides suffered a familiar lack of cutting edge in front of goal this season, but it was Atletico who passed up the best chance when Angel Correa fired wide after just three minutes. “We lacked a goal, but apart from that I feel for the players because they deserved more,” said Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane. “10 points is a lot but that will change for sure because Barca will not always win and we will be in the running.” After a bright start from Atletico, Real’s first chance came on the counter-attack but Juanfran outpaced Cristiano Ronaldo when the Portuguese was put clean through by Luka Modr...

I didn’t receive any money from Maina — Jonathan

Image
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said he did not receive any money from the controversial pension fund. He said there was no iota of truth in reports that he was paid N5b monthly from the money. His media adviser, Mr. Ikechukwu Eze, gave the  explanation in Abuja on Saturday while reacting to a statement credited to the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), published in a national newspaper last week. The chief legal officer of the federation was said to have told a Senate ad-hoc committee that an “ex-president was taking N5bn monthly from the Pension Fund.” Eze dismissed the claim as “a blatant lie hurriedly cooked up to divert the attention of the general public from the raging ‘Mainagate’ and other embarrassing scandals.” He added, “We believe that the story was concocted as part of the unfolding grand design (by the Buhari administration) to always dodge responsibility and blame every evil act taking p...

Party set to sack Mugabe, sources say, as Zimbabweans march on residence

Image
Mugabe’s 37-year rule has been effectively at an end since the army seized control on Wednesday, confining him to his residence, saying it wanted to target the “criminals” around him. Shortly after the sources revealed the meeting, a motorcade left Mugabe’s official residence in the capital Harare to boos and jeers from onlookers, although a security said Mugabe was not inside. Hundreds of thousands of people had flooded the streets of Harare singing, dancing and hugging soldiers in an outpouring of elation at Mugabe’s demise, while others marched towards his residence. In scenes reminiscent of the downfall of Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu in 1989, men, women and children ran alongside the armored cars and the troops who stepped in this week to oust the only ruler Zimbabwe has known since independence in 1980. Under house arrest in his lavish ‘Blue Roof’ compound, he has watched support from his ZANU-PF party, security services and people evaporate in less t...
